This is a Marquis Gold 5500 unit. It is mounted in a large RV. Here is the issue: it cranks for a revolution or 2 - fast, and then starts. The governor smoothes out within a second or 2 and engine runs fine.
Let go of the starter button, engine quits. Unit will not start from remote location, on unit, only starts from switch on interior of the RV. Fault code check: initial code - 3. Secondary code 3-2, which in the manual says low crank speed. Obviously not the case since the engine is starting and running almost instantly.
As long as the start switch is held, the engine runs fine. Let go of the start button - engine stops. A little history - about 2 years ago, this unit was used for nearly 9 days straight.
On the 10th day, a fault code came up 'unable to hold load'. The unit was taken to the onan dealer, and unit was inspected. The owner was told there was no problem. Unit ran and made power last year.
First attempt to start this season, and the current problem arose. Oil was changed, new plugs installed, unit has new air filter. Old plugs have carbon fouling (still worked), I believe due to the fact that the engine is not running long enough to clean off the plugs. This unit has less than 300 hours total use. As the unit is not identifying the proper reason for shut down, is it correct to assume either a generator or control problem? Thanks, Andrew P/S - anyone know of a Local ONAN dealer to Morristown NJ?
I called the 800 # in the owners manual, the number comes up as Brooklyn N.Y. I was transferred to a Newark NJ number, but was dropped by the electronic answering system.
Brooklyn did not give me the Newark NJ number, and they have not called back. Engine runs about 5 seconds after starter is released. Starter is not driving the engine - it is running at governed speed. No 110 output to the RV, not even a flicker.
To get at the slip rings, the unit must be removed from the RV. The only accessable area is the engine heads and the carb/air filter.
The rest is buried within the cabinet. Thanks for the info. From reading Eric's post, it seems that the problem may be a generator internal problem - possibly bad diodes or a fried genny. The unit will have to be pulled from the RV in order to access the internals. If the slip rings are dirty it will not stay running. Disconnect the two spade terminals at the brushes and measure the resistancd. If memory serves me right it should be around 21-25 ohms.
If not remove the brush holder and look at the rings with a light. You cann do this while it is still in the unit. The brushes and brush holder is at the top of the generator behind the the box containing the start/stop switch. Also try to start it while looking at the slip rings, make sure the rotor is turning. If not it lost the belt. Kpack, the oil was changed, and the RV is level. I bypassed the oil sender - same result, shutdown within seconds of start switch shutoff.
This unit is in a close fitting cabinet, inside a compartment in the RV. I cannot get to the generator, without removing the assembly from the RV.(BOO-HISS) They don't make it easy to service in this application. I agree that the slip rings probably need attention, but I am not able to tackle this job (removing the unit from the RV). Thanks for all the help for all who have posted.
Camper, I believe that this is a direct drive unit - no belt - could be wrong, can't see anything but the engine heads and air filter box from the outside of the camper it is mounted in.
