Marine Parts Express created this customized parts list for the engine model you selected. All are genuine Volvo Penta parts and Volvo Penta of the Americas, Inc.
Warrants that new or factory exchange parts and accessories will be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year. We have translated some of the hard-to-understand part names into easier names. You will however see the original Volvo Penta part name when you order. If there is an engine serial number in the notes box, it refers to the SN break. If the part number doesn't match what you see on your part, it may be that the part number has been superceded. Check with us if you have questions. Click on the part number to see our discounted price and how to order.
CapeDory28.info Mechanical - Considering 1988 CD28 with TAMD41A. What are common issues? Will3 - Sep 04, 2012 - 02:16 AM Post subject: Considering 1988 CD28 with TAMD41A. What are common issues?
We are looking at a 1988 CD28 Flybridge model with a Volvo TAMD41A engine. The boat has hardly been used for 6+ years and also has not been hauled during that time. It was cranked monthly and the bottom cleaned by a diver monthly but only left the dock for very short runs maybe a half-dozen times in that 6+ years. 1 - I have hard that Volvo parts are very expensive so that is a concern. Is that true? 2 - Are the parts still available for that motor & Transmission? 3 - Should we get a Volvo expert to survey the motor and transmission?
4 - Is finding a qualified mechanic to service, repair, and maintain these engines difficult since they are almost 25 years old? 5 - Are all of the CD28's Flybridge models powered with 200 hp Volvo's? 6 - What about the manifolds, risers, heat exchangers, & coolers. Are they still available & affordable? Thanks for any help.
Tomkiely - Sep 04, 2012 - 11:55 AM Post subject: RE: Considering 1988 CD28 with TAMD41A. What are common issu Will - If the boat is in the CT area, I would have Brian at 'www.mcdonnellmarine.com' give you an assessment before you buy.
He is very knowledgeable and straightforward. The mechanic at my boat yard in MA removed the heat exchanger, oil cooler, and after cooler. After reconditioning and replacing some parts (expensive) they were sent out for pressure testing before being reinstalled. It was obvious that preventive maintenance had not been done on any of these for many years, and I consider it worth the expense.
I have put over 370 hours on the engine in the 2 years of ownership and with the exception of the above repairs, have only had to do the usual oil changes, etc. As part of the initial survey a fluids analysis was performed by H.O. Penn in Newington, CT. I have been continuing this on both gear and engine oil at each oil change and consider it a good investment. Tom Will3 - Sep 04, 2012 - 04:42 PM Post subject: Tom, thank you for the information. We are not near CT but may give Brian a call or email for advice. I'll have a list of questions that develop as this evaluation proceeds so thanks to any forum members for any help along the way.
1 - The owner tells me the boat cruises at 14 knots with the 200 hp Volvo. Does that sound right? 2 - If so what rpm & fuel consumption should I expect? 3 - What is the suggested/recommended/typical/best cruising speed?
4 - Are the fuel tanks prone to leak? 5 - What material are the fuel tanks made of? 6 - Are they hard to get out of the boat? 7 - Are transmission issues common? Complete failure, repairable, or rebuild able?
8 - On this fly-bridge model there is a single door on the starboard side. How hard is it to remove and re install the wall separating the aft deck from the main salon in the event one wants to re power? 9 - fully loaded with fuel, water, supplies, and 2-4 adults. What is the draft of the boat? 10 - How much does the boat weigh? 11 - Is there a link to the 1988 TMAD41A manual?
12 - Ditto for the boat manual (and original sales brochure) Thanks for any help. Djmarchand - Sep 05, 2012 - 12:44 AM Post subject: Will: Although I do not have a Volvo Tamd40A in my CD 28 (its a gasser), I am a member of boatdiesel and I watch the posts on this engine. It has a reputation of being a smoker. It seems that Volvo raised the compression ratio and modified the injectors on its succesor, the B model to resolve this problem.
So the problem was well known. So be aware of this problem. It is engine specific so maybe yours is ok. Who you used to see regularly on this forum has a CD 28 flybridge with the Volvo engine.
He only gets about 10 kts at cruise. Also the Volvo transmission is very expensive to replace if it fails- about $10K. David Will3 - Sep 05, 2012 - 02:47 AM Post subject: David, Thank you for your response.
Hopefully others will share their thoughts on these subjects. BoatDiesel.com: Don't you have to pay to belong to BoatDiesel?
Which membership do you have or suggest? - Smoke: I wonder how bad they smoke when the engine is properly serviced and setup?
I understand a number of things can contribute to smoking including injectors and turbo needing service. Anything else (other than burning oil/rings?) - Volvo Transmission: I heard they were expensive. $10k sounds like Yanmar repower to me unless they can be rebuilt. Maybe Mark? Or others will share their comments. Thanks again.
Will bamartin06 - Sep 05, 2012 - 10:57 AM Post subject: Will, I bought my 1987 CD28 with a TAMD41A Volvo diesel two years ago and I'm happy to provide you with what I've learned. My CD28 cruises comfortably at 8-10 knts (2500-2800rpm). Freguently I'll push it to 12.5 knts (3200rpm). Although she does smoke on first startup, this abates once underway. Fuel consumption at 2500-2800 rpm is about 4.6-5.0 gal/hr. Fuel consumption at 3200 is about 7.6 gal/hr.
The best cruising speed depends on the conditions. I'm a 'Harbor Hopper'. I'm not in an rush to get anywhere so I like lumbering along at 10 knts. I've only heard of one owner that has had trouble with leaking fuel tanks.
Here on the forum look for the owner of 'Walkabout, hull #153'. As I remember he posted quite a few pictures of replacing the tanks and the engine.
Fuel tanks are made of aluminum. Can't get to the fuel tanks out without removing the engine. From what I've discovered, the MS-4 reverse gear is prone to failure after 1500 hrs. Rebuild could cost $1,700-$2,000 for each gear.
Equally if not more expensive. Very difficult finding exact repalcement trans. Take a look at the on-line 'Walkabout' pictures.
Not sure the wall between the cockpit and salon has to be removed to take out the engine. Empty draft is just under 3'. I'll assume fully loaded its maybe 3.5-4' My depth alarm is set at 5'. I motor through Point Judith Pond in southern RI fully loaded and its never sounded. According to the owners manual, 8500 lbs empty.
Send me an e-mail (bamartin06@gmail.com), I'll send you a copy of the TAMD41A operators manual and a copy of the workshop maintenance manual. I'll send you what I have. This is a great forum. You'll find there is a fairly small group of the same people that respond to questions but they have real passion for their boats. Keep posting your questions. I've learned a great deal from these folks and although I'm still learning I'm happy to pass along what I know and what I have.
Tomkiely - Sep 05, 2012 - 12:01 PM Post subject: Will - Just a few points to add: My engine smokes heavily at start up, particularly if I haven't run it for 3-4 days; but once at operating temp., it is no worse than other engines of its era. The Boat Diesel site is well worth the $25 annual membership. There is a lot of good info. From some very knowlegeable members. Will3 - Sep 18, 2012 - 01:56 PM Post subject: OK, we are now the proud new owners of a Cape Dory 28 FB, hull # 140.
Thanks to all for helping me with the preliminary questions. I will be following up on the comments posted previously on this thread. After I asked the questions I decided to wait until we actually owned the boat to follow-up. Thanks again for the help folks. Bamartin06 - Sep 18, 2012 - 05:53 PM Post subject: Congratulations! Through tempest and storm may she always return you safely home. Will3 - Sep 18, 2012 - 10:24 PM Post subject: Thanks.
We have had a lot of boats but are very excited about our Cape Dory 28 FB. Perfect vessel for us right now.
